Putting this comment up as a post:
The ferry is shut down again today. According to the ferry doctors message this morning possibly for 2-3 days maybe more. Im just relaying what I heard. Also took a drive up to the State Park in Algonac. Ice thick and moving quickly. As far as I could see upriver nothing but ice. The Welland Canal opened yesterday, and the Soo Locks open Fri. So ships will be running and getting priority from the Coast Guard. Thats all I know. The airboat is running on the hour.

Do we know if the airboat is $5.oo per trip??? I heard $15.00 but don't believe it. And is he running on the hour all day?
The cost is $5 per trip and airboat will run every hour on the hour.
Remember when there was talk of a bridge - the ferry was hardly ever out of service and if it was, it was only for a few hours or a day at most. Now that the bridge is on hold and there is no competition on the horizon.....

Freddy-
I have heard that before. I wasn't here then,(about what years did it change?) What caused this change? I watched the ferry struggle to reach the dock yesterday late afternoon when the ice packed in and stopped. How did they do it back then? how could the ferry drive through all that ice and can't do it now? confused. please explain.
GRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
At this rate, I won't get the cabin fixed up for summer until fall!
The boss (wife) is gonna be pissed!
Can I get a refrigerator on the airboat??? :-)

Bert - the economy caused the change. Back then they just didn't give up. They worked harder to make sure it stayed open and would run.
This doesnt have anything to do with the economy, a bridge coming or not, etc. Its just nature taking its course. We have had a long cold Winter which makes ice. Eventually it has to go somewhere. Sometimes there is just too much for the ferry to run through. Believe me in my years Ive seen it worse where the ferry didnt run for a long time where we took the cutter back and forth. I think we have been lucky so far and give the ferry credit for running as much as they have in the past month. At least there are airboats. This isnt anything new and the World wont end because of it. Its just one of those things. It could all clear out in a day or stick around. Who knows. Im sure the ferry doesnt like losing money either.
Thanks to Horvath and Jay Deboyer the stores on the island will no longer be receiving supplies via the fire dept airboat.the boat had to go back to the island side anyway and thought they could help by bringing supplies. The fire dept was told NEVER again. We choose to live there and we should be
prepared.Be sure to thank your politicians for their support. Its our tax dollars too.
The Clay Twp Board also stopped the Harsens Island Air Boat from bringing our mail across
so the clay twp board told them NOT to bring mail?then I think they should come pick up our trash , we pay for that. Are they so obtuse and arrogant that because we live here we dont deserve service? The harsens Island fire dept runs the airboat back and forth and sits at the launch area,so why would bringing the mail across be an issue?how much does it cost for that boat to make a few trips for several days a year for necessities? $1,ooo ? 2,000? this island pays a large portion of waterfront tax and any other city has to plow extra when it snows so why dont we deserve mail???
I really dont see the big deal here. There is another airboat. Nobody is not getting their mail. As for the garbage, there are numerous dumpsters on the island you can toss your trash in. Perhaps there is a liability issue with the fire dept. How may airboats do we need? Lets call in the National Guard to rescue us. Give me a break.
so all dumpsters on the island are up for grabs????
I can think of a few businesses that would not agree with that idea lol
Yea, You can't just go take your trash to any dumpster on the Island...lol..that is just ridiculous !!!
We the tax payers Pay for that air boat...we shouldn't have to rely on a citizen to bring our mail when "WE" have an air boat...Not to mention we also pay The Clay Twp Boards salaries. For them to say we can't use it for certain things is absurd.
I think a recall is in order!!
well I at least would like to say that the mail should be brought across like it apparently has been in the fire dept boat, seeing as they both are a govt entity.why should a private guy have to do their job? what if the ferry and airboat both "chose"to not run? we get no mail,no access to the mainland etc.we are the highest per capita waterfront community in michigan paying waterfront taxes and the twp can not provide us with mail?? I guess its a good thing they push the ferry past its limits and run the air boat for community sake , because it certainly has not been for profit this winter.
