Harsens Island Ferry & Ice Conditions Update

All is well here at Harsens Island.

There is a nice wide path at the ferry.  The ferry has been running on its normal winter schedule (6am to midnight---every 15 minutes,  midnight to 6am---every 20 minutes) however, lately the ferry has been running only every half hour midnight to 5am.

As long as the weather remains cold we should have no problems with ferry service so.....come on out for a visit.

I am the Public Affairs Officer for The US Coast Guard in Detroit. We want to let all the Harsens Island residents and ferry users know that we are carefully monitoring the water levels in the area and are not currently planning to break ice in the North Channel.

In the event local flooding becomes a threat, we will work with local officials, the press, and the Champion's Auto Ferry to ensure that open communications occur prior to any ice breaking. If there are any questions please feel free to contact me at Justin.L.Westmiller@uscg.mil

Good morning everyone, we are watching the ice conditions very closely this morning and are working very hard with the ice breakers Mackinaw, Bristol Bay, Neah Bay, and Samuel Risley to move traffic through the very heavy ice conditions in the lower St Clair River.

We may need to break into the North Channel at 10 A.M. on Monday January 17th to relieve the ice conditions throughout the river system. There will be information to follow on this!

Please stay tuned to this blog as well as the the Clay Township Website, The Times Herald, and your local news outlets for up to the minute information.

Here is an update on ice breaking operations. Currently, the Bristol Bay and Neah Bay are working to flush the ice out of the old South Channel to give the ice jam in the shipping channel somewhere to go. In the meantime, the Mackinaw and Samuel Risley are working to free and escort the Herbert C. Jackson through the heavy ice.

The Commanding Officer of the Mackinaw is a former Commanding Officer of the Bristol Bay and has years of ice breaking experience in the Great Lakes. He stated this morning during a conversation, that this was the heaviest he has ever seen the ice in the St Clair River.

Please be patient as we work through this situation, and keep the important information flowing to all interested and involved!
