Ashes filled the air as a brush fire burned 100 to 150 acres of land Thursday, mostly in Algonac State Park, Algonac Assistant Fire Chief Jerry Doan said.
The department is investigating the cause of the fire today, but dry conditions may have been a factor, he said.
The fire started near Sherwood Lane and Michigan Street in Algonac, Doan said. Firefighters responded shortly after 5:30 p.m., and cleared the scene at about 9:30 p.m. By that time, the fire was in Clay Township, still on state park land.
Algonac, Marine City, and Clay and Ira township fire departments responded. DTE Energy also responded because of some damaged utility poles, but Doan didn’t believe anyone lost power.
There were no injuries, and no homes were damaged or evacuated.
Prescribed Burn scheduled for St. Johns Marsh Wildlife Area
Burning started yesterday & will continue in the coming days...
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment will be conducting a prescribed ecological burn this month at St. Johns Marsh Wildlife Area. The burn will rejuvenate fertility and remove above-ground remnants of the invasive grass, phragmites australis, from the marsh that was treated with herbicide last summer, according to MDNRE Wildlife Division.
"Burning the marsh will help facilitate the restoration of these areas with native vegetation by allowing light to reach the soil surface, increasing the opportunity for native seeds to grow and providing nutrients to stimulate plant growth," said Wildlife Biologist Ernie Kafcas.
The burn is part of a four-year U.S. Fish and Wildlife grant-funded Marsh Restoration Project at Metro Beach Metropark and St. John's Marsh, a cooperative effort of the MDNRE, the Huron-Clinton Metroparks, Harrison Township, the Great Lakes/Atlantic Regional Office of Ducks Unlimited, Michigan Sea Grant, and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. The Marsh Restoration Project is a comprehensive management plan to restore and improve wildlife habitat and ensure the long-term ecological sustainability of the marsh.
The prescribed burn will be accomplished under the direction of trained and experienced personnel when humidity, wind speed, and other parameters meet fire safety criteria and optimal conditions for a successful burn. Because of weather variability, it is not possible to predict the exact date of the burn. During the burn, smoke and open flames may be visible.

Man who shot at 7-Eleven customer is sought
Police were looking for a man who shot at a customer who tried to stop him from stealing a six-pack of beer from the 7-Eleven at Statler and Jefferson on Thursday. The man tried to leave with the beer about 2 a.m. when a clerk yelled for a customer, who was entering the store, to stop him. The customer, a St. Clair Shores resident in his 50s or 60s, tussled with the suspect, Sgt. Dave Centala said. The suspect pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and fired a shot just outside the front door. The customer ran, and the suspect fired another shot at him but did not hit him. Police found 9mm casings, a broken beer bottle and a bullet fragment in the front of the building, Centala said.
The suspect is described as white, in his 20s, 5 feet 7, 125 pounds and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with writing on it, blue jeans and white Nike high top sneakers with light blue soles. He fled north on Jefferson on a beat-up mountain bike.Police say they believe he lives in the area. Anyone with information is asked to call 586-445-5305.
