Just spoke to Harsen's Island/Clay Twp fire chief, Daryl Dupage.
Arrangements are being made to get the school children back home from the Algonac mainland. Daryl will keep me informed and I will post as soon as I get the final report.

Anyone know what time that last ferry will run with the kids so I can walk across? Thanks!
I ant believe school was even open today, with the weather. And the uncertainty if the ferry schedule. Knowing that, people should have just stayed home, and kept the kids home too. Most school districts were closed today. We did sort of know this was coming.
I don't believe they will be using the ferry to get the school kids across. They will probably use the airboats

sorry for the double post
When I went across the ferry at 10 PM last night, it was posted that the ferry would be open today until 9 PM. So it is not "our" fault we sent the kids to school. They have missed enough already and will be missing more, so we sent them to get as much work in advance as they can. THAT IS preparing! I would like to know why someone let the ferry take a busload of kids this morning to school, when someone knew the ferry would close as of 6:30 this AM???!!! I dont know who to blame, but somebody in charge somewhere did not consider these children being stranded and they should be ashamed of themselves. And if there is indeed open water right now, they should hustle the kids home.
David Bryson, owner of Champions Auto Ferry, has been talking to the Coast Guard regarding ferry operations on Monday. There is a NEW PLAN for working the ice jam between St. Clair and Marysville and operations in the North Channel. ..Great plan Dave..I have a child stuck across sitting in the car until the fan boat runs..It would be wise to Daves health that he INFORM someone if the ferry will cross. If that boat comes across and my kid is sitting at the dnr i'm comming down.
I agree that we could be better informed. I'm not sure who is to blame. I suggest that the US Coast Guard be responsible for getting the school kids home. I'm not sure the airboat has life jackets that will fit youngsters.
well i have kids in school too and i planned for this for a week now...so to say its good for daves health to let us know isnt cool he can only do or say what the coast guard says ..its not his fault... you live here as well as i do and you should know better and plan for it to happen at anytime so to threaten peoples health is way out of line...so if you dont like it maybe you should move...but let me guess you love the island the other 11 months of the year..so if thats true.. deal with it and plan for it...and if you wanna threaten at least give your name dont hide behind anonymous...thanks Don R.
Coast Guard Group Detroit's phone number is: 313.568.9525. Their commander is Joe Snowden.
Per the Times Herald....
An airboat will start making runs between Harsens Island and Algonac between 3 and 3:30 p.m.
The High School just called...they are bussing the kids home on the ferry now!
a bus will be bringing our children to the ferry starting now, they will be going to all the school to pick the island children up, but unconfirmed, how they are getting across. waiting for answer from school transportation.....on hold of course, now they said they dont know...will call me back. I'll let you know when I do.
OK...WHEW, KIDS WILL BE COMING HOME ON THE BUS, AND DROPPED OFF AT THEYRE HOMES. ONLY PROBLEM, IF NO ONE IS AT THEY CHILDS RESIDENT, THEY WILL BE GOING BACK TO THE ELEMENTARY, AND MIDDLE SCHOOL.
Bus leaving school now,,,my child just a got a call from a freind at school....move
Yup...nice heads up...Thats it...Its way past time for the state to intervien,,,bridge now..
I did not send my child to school knowing the Ice/Coast Guard situation..yes, a lot of school has been missed but i arranged for schoolwork to be sent home ...
You have to plan for these things...the school won't tell you to keep your child home...you have to make that decision for yourself. It's not the Ferry's fault...He isn't going to make that choice for you either...so don't be angry at anyone, but yourself!!
I would like to say that in my earlier post, I did not blame the ferry or the school. I was not going to send my child to school today until it was posted EVERYWHERE that the ferry would in fact be open today until 9 PM. You are SUPPOSED to send your kid to school if the ferry is running. But if whoever made the decision to close the ferry, or who caused it to close, knew this at 6:30 AM, someone should take the time to call the parents and let them know that plans were changed, then let us decide. Please dont say we unprepared Mr Anonymous.
True!!...as soon as they knew...they should have spoke up..i definitely agree with that...1000%...
But it is my choice to or Not to send my child to school...if i feel threatened by the ice or whatever the situation...MY CHOICE!! No One elses!!
And it is your choice to feel the way you do...and that is fine too...i'm not arguing this point with you...this wis just my opinion...living over here has it's ups and downs...The Ice...well that's a down when it comes to school and work...but ultimately....the decisions that you make to cope with all of this, well, are your decisions!!
I've only been on the island for a few years and I love all the excitement: brush fires, ice jams and interesting blogs! I love this informative web site and want to thank Sue & Melon for making it happen.
For the latest ferry updates I check this website and also call the ferry to listen to recordings and I get “select alert” warnings from www.Stclaircounty.org and satellite images from http://coastwatch.glerl.noaa.gov/modis/region_map.html
Champion ferry does its best to keep us informed. Today when they went across to pick up the school kids, it took them about 40 min to navigate through the flowing ice piles and into the ice jammed slip on the mainland, but they did it for the children and I commend them for making that arduous trip across the rickety North Channel while dodging the invasive coast guard cutter. It was really something to see.
Now, let’s hope Mother Nature calms down so things can get back to normal on this lovely peaceful, neighborly island.
WELL SAID!!
I promise, I think, this will be my last point regarding this school matter; Thank you for seeing my point about how we should have been notified when things CHANGED. I agree with you that you have the right to keep your child home if you feel threatened...I did not feel threatened based on all the information that I got from no less than 3 sources that it was safe to send my child to school today. But you did seem like you were unsympathetic towards anyone worried/upset that their child was stuck on the mainland. Claimed we were unprepared. I dont mind being stuck here at all, dont really care much whose fault it is, even Mother Nature, I just think that whatever powers that be, whoever they are that make the ultimate decision to close must consider stranded children foremost. Hey, why dont we get together sometime and get drunk, smoke a joint, and laugh about all of this?! Just kidding...poking fun at an earlier post. Peace.
LMAO!!!
You made me laugh....thanks I needed that. I just found that you responded. Sorry!
I do agree with you that the children be considered over all else...from experience...i didn't trust any of what was going on ...and that is why I kept my child home...
oh and you bring the booze and I'll bring the Pot...i have all kinds stocked up, just in case ya know..can't go without that....LOL Peace back :)
