Sue, I'm not sure if i sent pics to the correct email address...but i sent them yesterday...wondered if they would be posted? Thanks..i sent them to harsensisland@gmail.com .. Have a Great Day :O)
The cutters are not gone today. Just passed one in the North Channel by CVS. A couple more up near port huron, and on the cutoff channel. I drove up to Algonac State Park, the river if full of ice as far a you could see above Recor Point, the power plant. The ice is moving and the only open water for it is the north channel. The south channel at russel island is packed and not moving. Waiting for the ferry about an hour ago, the ice was coming down the north channel, and the ferry had a tough time getting to the ramp on the mainland side, because of ice flow near the dock. Thats why I took a drive up the river. The ice is coming this way. Thick heavy ice.
The North Channel is plugged at the mouth and nothing has been moving since yesterday afternoon. The CG helicopter has been flying over repeatedly for the last hour, so I'm sure at least one of the breakers will be down here before long.
The north channel IS NOT plugged at the mouth. I just came from there less than an hour ago. The ice is flowing, and its open water all the way down past the ferry, giving the ice a place to go. Again all the way past the state park, and recor point power plant ice, ice ice. And its moving. The only open water is the path the cutters made on the algonac side of the north channel, and at 10:30 a cutter went past CVS.
to the anon who says Im being nasty. I never was nasty to anyone. Iam an islander, probably longer than you, Ive got friends, and Ive done something with my life. I dont have to explain anything to you. Think what you want. Everyone takes everything the wrong way.
The mouth of the North Channel is below Decker's where the channel empties into Anchor Bay - not up by the ferry or the power plant or the state park. I live on that portion of the channel. It has been at a dead standstill since yesterday afternoon.
You used the correct email address for the pictures. Melon is the owner of this site so the email will go to her. The pictures that I posted were sent to my personal email address. Don't worry, Melon will get to the pictures as soon as she has a chance and if you have any questions, just email her at the same addy again. Thanks for all your posts and have a great day!!!
i Moved to the island FOR THE FERRY! I love it! dAVE DOES AN AWESOME JOB! HE CAN ONLY tell us what is told to him AND I* AM SURE that he does what US CG tells him to do BECAUSE IF HE DOES NOT HE IS FINED! Lets all protect Dave for all his hard work/He works 24 hours a day FOR US!!
You are NOT an "Islander" if you are as nasty as you are...you have nothing but mean things to say about us Islanders...Like..backstabbers..we've done nothing with our lives...blah, blah blah.......I am stopping now....you are not worth my time...besides, you have NO Idea how long I've lived over here...i know you are trying to probably figure out who i am but...won't happen...sorry...I'm sure my family and I have been on this Island way longer then you...so whatever!! you don't count..BYE Nasty mean Mainlander!
Who said anything about Dave? Dave is there on that ferry come rain/snow/high and low water!! soo sorry hunny!! my tax dollars help out this wonderful island! i love the island, its beautiful!! just because i'm not a islander i can not have an opinion? Opinions are like butt holes.. everything one has one!! why is mine wrong?
Johnson---I'm not an "islander" but I'm on that island a lot and have family that live there and own a business.....My comments regarding your comment...BRIDGE is NO WAY! That Island would never be the same!!!! Most people that live there have been dealing with ferry shut downs for years and they don't complain.
Back to my first post------Can anyone confirm wether the Ferry is running this evening. I have family staying with me that would like to know if they can go home....Thanks!
Call the Ferry.748-3757..they have no intentions of closing down...lots of big ice moving...but the Coast Guard say it's suppose to thin out within the next few hours...the coast guard is trying to push it out of here...that is my understanding
The only advantage I see (notice I said "I") is it would make emergency situations a lot easier to handle. If you live on the island you would know that a bridge would change the atmosphere and aviance (sp?)of the island.
Its called haveing an option, ferry or bridge!! its also called competition with the rates of crossing both... so who winners here?? the consumers, you and i!! plus this is also just an opinion
I do live on the Island...and I'm not going to argue this whole bridge thing, but i for one would Love to see a bridge go up...and I think one day it still will...you would still have to pay to go across it..it would be a toll bridge...I didn't move to the Island because it has a Ferry....I live here because I can't see myself living anywhere else...This is my home! I Love the Island....I don't think a Bridge would change how i feel about the Island one bit...the only difference would be to me is that i could come and go as I Please....that is all...just my opinion and it won't change. :O)
I think a bridge would change the atmosphere of the island, definately. The traffic level would greatly increase, as some people are hesitant to cross the ferry while just out driving around. I have yet to hear of anyone suffering dire consequences in a medical emergency due to a ferry shutdown. Just an opinion and believe everyone has the right to one, not just those that agree with me. :)
Yea, there probably are the some people that are hesitant to get on the ferry...but NOT that many!! I am still trying to figure out where all this traffic is going to come from...seriously, i don't understand that thinking.. and I really don't think the atmosphere would change at all for the Year round residents...and really that is who the Bridge would benefit...and I really think we have been extremely lucky about the whole Medical Emergency thing...thank goodness

How exactly would a Bridge change the Island??? Don't understand that one!!
What are you from the west side

if traffic level greatly increase, that would be great for our local stores, shops, and BAR!!!
Yea, there probably are the some people that are hesitant to get on the ferry...but NOT that many!! I am still trying to figure out where all this traffic is going to come from...seriously, i don't understand that thinking..
