FERRY CLOSING SATURDAY MORNING

Clay Township dispatch was just notified that the ferry has posted a sign saying they will close down tomorrow morning at 10 AM and resume operations Monday PM. (No Monday time indicated).

The reason for the shut down is that the Coast Guard is returning to resume ice operations in the North Channel.

If any more information becomes available we will post it.

Ok, I'll admit, now I'm getting really upset. Before you peacenicks all say "chill dude, you live on an island" I'll say that yes, I know it's an island and I took that in consideration before moving here. Mother nature and all that I can deal with. THIS however seems REALLY absurd and is not mother nature. It is government stepping on the people it's supposed to serve in order to serve the almighty dollar. I could even accept a weekend of downtime IF they said they'd stop late sunday and let things freeze up again so the ferry could run around 7 am.
THAT would seem fair. To basically make us cough up another vac day for monday is B.S.

BESIDE the little issue of what the heck do they think they are doing by expending all this $ to move a bit of ice a mile downstream?? Why not work the friggin ice jam up in port huron?

Sorry but having to miss monday again really ticks me off. some consideration of us and planning could have made it a sat-sun only event instead of running into Monday!

I've lived here my whole life and ferry/ice problems come with the territory. But this is turning into a complete joke. Every day there is a chance of the ferry shutting down....while it runs thru open water. Ridiculous. It seems everybody but them realizes they can't get far enough down the Middle or Norht Channel to accomplish what they want to. Don't they own charts??

I think it's more some kind of a power struggle...Champion's Auto didn't want the Coast Guard coming down by the ferry because it messed with his operations...and the USCG wants to come down and play in the North Channel...for what reason????? It makes no sense to me...shouldn't they be trying to get the South Channel running????

In 1986 we were iced in for a month. The Mac and the
DeGroseilliers ran the S Chan. side by side. The Mac ran the US side on the channel bank and the DeGroseilliers ran the Can. channel bank . They eventually got the river running. They also zig zagged up and down the channel. Now they only run straight down the middle and it still goes nowhere. Maybe they think they will forget their route.

Steve- yes, I'm glad you brought that up. I figured it was me. I got 2 of those calls with silence today. And only one email around 6:40am. A few days ago though, the call did work for me but mostly not.
It's a drag cause you'd like to depend on that service but as I said anonymously here a month or two ago, they are not dependable. Close, nut they definitely need to address it.

I know some people are okay with the Coast Guard screwing up the weekend but I'm not. I am a nurse who works weekends. I know that you think writing letters and emails and calling doesn't help. I believe that if enough people take the initiative, we could make a difference. I also don't like the way that the ferry is handling this. Shutting down on Friday night so the ice could "settle" was unacceptable. What if someone had a heart attack in the middle of the night? Would they have had to take an airboat when there was a perfectly good path across?
